Chronicles of the Lensmen

EE Doc Smith created one of the early classics of the science fiction genre with his series of space-adventure novels about the Lensmen of the Galactic Patrol, incorruptible space-police augmented by astonishing mental powers. These books have formed a significant influence on science fiction writing, and are considered by many to have influence George Lucas in his creation of the Jedi Knights. Written in an age when a "computer" was a profession, not a machine, the novels are definitely showing their age. Yet it is hardly the details of technology, however dated it may sometimes seem, that drives the storytelling. Any reader of science fiction who wants an understanding of the genre's classics needs to read these novels.

Triplanetary
The first volume in the Chronicles of the Lensmen, Triplanetary brings a tedious 6-chapter introduction to the universe of the Lensmen before focusing on the intricacies of the story itself... the story of a time before the Lens, and humanity's first successful encounters with the agents of Eddore.  There's a lot of science, a lot of heroic secret-agent-scientists, and a lot of interstellar conflict with impressive technobabble.  Clearly, this is where space opera was born.
